Embracing the Blues: stylish ways to incorporate blue flowers into your country garden- inspired summer wedding

Blue is a popular colour within weddings and each season has it’s own incredible blue flowers that truly shine. If you are getting married in the summer months then you will be spoilt for choice when it comes to choosing seasonal flowers that work in a country garden aesthetic. I want to share with you a stunning wedding that really does showcase how you can incorporate touches of blue in an elegant and stylish manner.

My couple were married in June, which is a wonderful month for seasonal flowers including peonies, stocks, sweetpeas and lots of luscious summer foliage. An outdoor ceremony followed by a wedding reception inside this period historic house in Bath, with the most incredible views!

How to use blue in a wedding flower colour palette?

Blue can potentially be quite a cold, stark colour so when my couple’s come to me wanting to use blue as either a primary colour or an accent I give the following advice. I always recommend using a variety of different tones of blue, so range from the deep indigo through to the pale dusky tones. This will ensure that your blues are warmed up and remain tonal and natural, giving a much more beautiful look. It is also important to use neutrals like these warm buttery yellow and ivory tones I used in this wedding. Or blue looks fabulous alongside the more muted mocha tones, and of course against the beautiful summer foliage that is in season here.

what Blue flowers are in season in summer?

There are so many beautiful blue flowers available during the summer months, delphiniums are an absolute must. A tall spire shape flower they can create such impact when placed en masse or included in more meadow inspired designs. Natural arches or floral pillar installations require statement focus flowers to provide true impact in scale of the arrangement, so delphiniums work wonders here. Again in floral meadow aisles, the tall shape of the bloom makes them a stunning choice. Delphiniums range from the palest baby blue, through to a muted pale blue with hints of lilac, through to a bold bright cobalt blue then into deeper indigo blue shades. This is what I mean when talking about using various tones, so encourage all of these blue shades to your wedding flowers and you will create something truly spectacular!

Hydrangeas are also a great choice for a seasonal summer blue flower, a blousy round headed bloom they work well in large statement designs or low table bowls. Brodia is a really dainty and delicate blue flower, locally grown in Cornwall. It’s dainty nature makes it a great flower to use within bridal bouquets, just a subtle touch of blue can be required sometimes and this works well. Forget me nots, oxypetalem, nigella, cornflowers are all brilliant additions to your blue wedding flower checklist.

How to dress an outdoor ceremony with Blue wedding flowers?

When considering an outdoor ceremony it is crucial that your wedding flowers will compliment the surroundings and natural backdrop to your ceremony. We were completely spoilt here with this unbelievable view of Bath following on from the beautiful view of the house’s gardens. June is mid summer meaning everything is looking luscious and blooming! The trees are fully formed and so encorporating this green foliage to your wedding flowers is always a good idea when you are holding your wedding in summer. To frame the happy coupe during the wedding ceremony we created two statement floral installations that enveloped the large Bath stone pillars. When working against such grandeur the flowers had to to be statement, yet in keeping with the surroundings. The aisle was dressed with simple meadow floor standing arrangements, placed next to each chair, full of scented stocks, delphiniums, daisies, campanula and lots of locally grown Cornish foliage.

Other blue flowers to consider throughout the seasons:

If you are getting married in Spring then this is a great month for blue spring flowers, dainty muscari have the most delicate scent, whereas hyacinths are a larger bulb with a more larger scent to go with it! Anemones work well too and bluebells will arrive later on in the spring. Autumn means you can opt for muted blue hydrangeas, penstemon, echinops whilst Winter can be a little tricker, the anemones and hyacinths can be brought in from Holland alongside thistles, which always add a touch of winter silvery blue.
